history / background
Education:

· Ohio State - BA in Physical Education

Little is known about his actual history / background. He comes from a family of Italian immigrants now living in Long Island, NY which seems to have made a lot of money in the US. By what means remains unknown. His relationship to his parents can be described as strained at best (his mother dressed him up in sailor suits until he was ten, his father beat him up at least once, he was forced to participate in civil war reenactments which he hated [he had to carried “poop-buckets”]). His father was/is most likely an alcoholic (“My father was too drunk to hurt anyone”, 2.10 - Chained). At some point, his family disowned him, his father stating Tony would only end up in the gutter (1.20 – Missing).
His mother is dead and his father remarried several times.

The reason for Tony’s flighty work history is, again, unknown.
During his time with NCIS, Tony got infected with pneumonic plague (y. pestis) – he survived, but is now more susceptible to diseases of the lung, such as pneumonia. It doesn’t really seem to affect him, though (when he’s not milking the fact that he had The Plague for favours, that is).

abilities
Tony speaks Spanish fluently; given the fact that he is Italian, I’ve always assumed he’d speak Italian as well, but no canonic information concerning Italian is given. He states that he plays the piano – and well at that. His mother forced him to take lessons. It’s apparent that at some point in his life, he took lessons in ballroom dancing as well.
He played baskettball and football well enough to go pro, but broke his leg in a football game against Michigan, thus ending his career before it began.
He’s a streetwise cop (now federal agent) who excels at undercover work; he’s also a pretty good shot.
His vision is 20/10 and his sense of smell is finely tuned as well (he “sniffs out” a hiding suspect once from several rooms away, remembering the scent of her perfume).

personality
Tony appears to be an overgrown frat-boy; loud, obnoxious and flirtatious to the point of being annoying or chauvinistic about it (yet pretty much all women find him very charming, as he just somehow manages to make it endearing). He doesn’t seem to know when to shut up, his immature behaviour getting him into trouble more often than not.

He does, however, prove time and time again that he is a capable investigator and agent, though his methods are sometimes inconventional. As his boss says, “You may not like his methods, but you gotta love the results” (3.07 – Honor Code). He does his best work at night, when there’s no one around that he has to put on a façade for and every once in a while, the little boy wanting approval bleeds through (every time we learn about his family, basically).

What he wants and needs most is to belong and for people to care – though of course, he’d never say this out loud. He’s not going to say anything he really wants, in fact, rather concentrating on things that hold only a superficial value – it’s part of his defensive mechanism, as talking about things that really mean something to him makes him vulnerable. He might attempt it every once in a while, but due to his normal behaviour, people rarely take him serious.

Growing up in a home (if you can call it that) where he was probably ignored to the point of neglect once his mother lost interest in him and outside of the daily reports he had to give his father, has made him go out of his way to seek attention – and reproach is still a form of attention (He once used his father’s most expensive ski suit to make a Halloween costume out of it). He’ll go to great length to gain approval, at least that of a person he respects (mainly, his boss).

He’s fiercely loyal, especially to his boss, and seems to enjoy being second man as opposed to the one giving the orders, though he’s proven to be able to take the lead and do it well (he runs the team twice, once during a case where his boss is kidnapped and once when his boss runs off to Mexico after experiencing amnesia). However, he won’t just roll over and take orders from anyone, you’ll have to earn his respect first and he’s going to stand up for himself if he thinks you’re in no position to give orders or make demands.

Tony says himself that he has commitment issues and his relationships never last very long.

In conclusion, Tony’s the kind of guy who’s going to goof around, do apparently no work at all and then surprise you by coming up with the needed results or a good idea seemingly out of nowhere.
